Cool Down When the Heat Is Up

Well, if it isn’t the “Snowpocalypse” of February, then it’s the 100-degree days of summer, but I guess it is that time of year. There are several things that a driver should adjust their focus to each Summer if you’re going to continue to safely turn miles & make it home safe & sound. After all, that’s the goal. From the moment you leave home, you’re going back home...you’re just delivering loads to various places along the way.

One of the biggest things to be aware of in the summertime is the road temperature. The hotter the temperature is, the hotter the road surface is going to be. This results in more tire failures then other seasons.

A good pre-trip is essential for ANY season, but in the summer, pay extra attention to your tires to minimize chances of being stranded on the side of the road.

Another thing to be aware of is no matter how good of shape you’re in, how young you are, or how invincible you think you may be, EVERYONE is susceptible to heat exhaustion & heat stroke. STAY HYDRATED!

Back in June of 2018, the heat got the better of me. I ended up in the hospital & the doctor told me to start drinking Pedialyte (yes, the baby drink) before doing anything out in the heat & several times throughout the day. That along with water & Gatorade replenishes all the vitamins & minerals you sweat out throughout a hot day.

Guys & Gals, the heat may be “something we have to deal with,” but we can take preventive measures to ensure our health & safety. Please be aware of the dangers, take care of yourself & the truck that takes care of you!

As always, we all appreciate the work you do every single day! Keep up the strong work! I’ll leave you with a quote from the great Jerry Rice: “Today, I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can do what others can’t!”
